Abstract: This book examines the welfare bricolage practices of migrants and refugees in superdiverse neighborhoods in Europe. It draws on original research from six European cities to explore how migrants and refugees navigate and negotiate the complex and often fragmented welfare systems in their new countries of residence. The book argues that welfare bricolage is a creative and resourceful way for migrants and refugees to access and combine different welfare resources to meet their needs. It also highlights the challenges and limitations of welfare bricolage, and the need for more inclusive and accessible welfare systems.

In recent years, Europe has become increasingly diverse, with growing numbers of migrants and refugees arriving from all over the world. This diversity is particularly pronounced in urban areas, where migrants and refugees often settle in superdiverse neighborhoods—areas with high levels of ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity. These neighborhoods pose significant challenges for welfare systems, which are often designed to serve the needs of more homogenous populations.

One way that migrants and refugees cope with the challenges of living in superdiverse neighborhoods is through welfare bricolage. Welfare bricolage is the practice of combining and adapting different welfare resources to meet one's needs. This can involve accessing formal welfare services, such as social assistance and healthcare, as well as informal resources, such as family, friends, and community organizations. Welfare bricolage can be a creative and resourceful way for migrants and refugees to access the support they need, but it can also be challenging and time-consuming.

This book examines the welfare bricolage practices of migrants and refugees in six European cities: London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Malmö. The book draws on original research, including interviews with migrants and refugees, as well as observations of welfare organizations and community groups. The book argues that welfare bricolage is a widespread and important practice among migrants and refugees in Europe. It also highlights the challenges and limitations of welfare bricolage, and the need for more inclusive and accessible welfare systems.

Welfare Bricolage in Practice

The research for this book was conducted in six European cities: London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Malmö. These cities were selected because they are all major destinations for migrants and refugees, and because they have a high degree of superdiversity. The research involved interviews with migrants and refugees, as well as observations of welfare organizations and community groups.

The research found that welfare bricolage is a widespread and important practice among migrants and refugees in Europe. Migrants and refugees use welfare bricolage to access a wide range of resources, including housing, healthcare, education, and social assistance. They also use welfare bricolage to navigate the complex and often fragmented welfare systems in their new countries of residence.

There are a number of factors that drive migrants and refugees to engage in welfare bricolage. One factor is the lack of access to formal welfare services. Migrants and refugees may be ineligible for certain welfare benefits, or they may be unable to access services due to language barriers or other obstacles. Another factor is the fragmentation of welfare systems. Migrants and refugees may need to access services from multiple different agencies, which can be confusing and time-consuming.

Welfare bricolage can be a creative and resourceful way for migrants and refugees to access the support they need. However, it can also be challenging and time-consuming. Migrants and refugees may need to spend a lot of time researching different resources and figuring out how to access them. They may also need to rely on the help of family, friends, or community organizations to navigate the welfare system.

The Challenges and Limitations of Welfare Bricolage

While welfare bricolage can be a creative and resourceful way for migrants and refugees to access the support they need, it also has a number of challenges and limitations. One challenge is that welfare bricolage can be time-consuming and stressful. Migrants and refugees may need to spend a lot of time researching different resources and figuring out how to access them. They may also need to rely on the help of family, friends, or community organizations to navigate the welfare system.

Another challenge is that welfare bricolage can be unreliable. Migrants and refugees may not always be able to find the resources they need, or they may not be able to access them in a timely manner. This can be particularly problematic for migrants and refugees who are in need of urgent assistance, such as housing or healthcare.

Finally, welfare bricolage can be socially isolating. Migrants and refugees who rely on welfare bricolage may feel like they are outside of the mainstream welfare system. They may also feel like they are a burden on their family, friends, and community organizations.

The Need for More Inclusive and Accessible Welfare Systems

The challenges and limitations of welfare bricolage highlight the need for more inclusive and accessible welfare systems. Welfare systems should be designed to meet the needs of all residents, regardless of their immigration status or country of origin. Welfare systems should also be easy to navigate and understand, and they should provide migrants and refugees with the support they need to integrate into their new communities.

There are a number of ways to make welfare systems more inclusive and accessible. One way is to reduce administrative barriers, such as language requirements and documentation requirements. Another way is to provide more support to migrants and refugees, such as information and referral services. Finally, welfare systems should be designed to be more flexible and responsive to the needs of migrants and refugees.

Welfare bricolage is a widespread and important practice among migrants and refugees in Europe. It is a creative and resourceful way for migrants and refugees to access the support they need, but
