Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a vital part of the American educational landscape. Founded in the wake of the Civil War, HBCUs have played a pivotal role in educating and empowering generations of African Americans. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout their history, HBCUs have remained steadfast in their mission to provide quality education and foster the success of their students.

A Rich History

The first HBCU was founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, which later became Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. In the years that followed, numerous other HBCUs were established across the country. These institutions were created to provide educational opportunities for African Americans who were denied access to white universities. HBCUs played a particularly important role during the Jim Crow era, when segregation was rampant. They offered black students a chance to learn and grow in an environment where they were treated with respect.
