King was born in 1883 in Alma, Wisconsin. He began drawing at a young age, and he sold his first cartoon to a local newspaper when he was just 14 years old. In 1906, King moved to Chicago, where he worked as a cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune.

In 1918, King created Gasoline Alley, which quickly became one of the most popular comic strips in the country. The strip follows the lives of a group of characters who live in a small town. Gasoline Alley was groundbreaking in its time, as it was one of the first comic strips to feature a continuing storyline.

King was also an accomplished banjo player. He began playing the banjo as a child, and he quickly became proficient at the instrument. King performed at venues all over the country, and he was even featured on the Grand Ole Opry.
