Bedford in the 19th Century

The 19th century was a time of great change for Bedford. The neighborhood's population exploded, from just over 1,000 residents in 1800 to over 100,000 by the end of the century. This growth was due in part to the construction of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1883, which connected Bedford to Manhattan. The bridge made it easier for workers to commute to Manhattan, and it also attracted new residents to the neighborhood.

The influx of new residents led to a boom in construction in Bedford. New homes, churches, and schools were built to meet the needs of the growing population. The neighborhood also became a center for industry, with factories and warehouses springing up along the waterfront. By the end of the 19th century, Bedford was a thriving and prosperous neighborhood.

One of the most significant events in Bedford's history occurred in 1894, when the neighborhood was annexed by the City of Brooklyn. This annexation gave Bedford access to city services, such as water, sewer, and police protection. It also led to a period of rapid growth and development in the neighborhood.

The 19th century was a time of great change and growth for Bedford. The neighborhood's population exploded, new homes and businesses were built, and the neighborhood became a center for industry. By the end of the century, Bedford was a thriving and prosperous neighborhood.
